Produttori del Gavi

A tale of devotion to a territory

TThe story of Produttori del Gavi is about hard work, commitment and courageous optimism.

A tale of devotion to a territory that slowly discovered its vocation, until it became fully aware of producing the best white wine of Piedmont using an exceptional variety that can enhance every nuance of its terroir of origin like no other: the Cortese grape.

HARD WORK

To empower lands that thrive away from the spotlight: where grapes were once purchased at bargain prices by bottlers and industrial producers who used them as a base wine for Vermouth and sparkling wines.

COMMITMENT

To form a united and equal group that can gather and transform the grapes of Gavi while ensuring income, cultivating passion and protecting livelihood: securing the possibility of continuing to cultivate vineyards while preserving its material and technical heritage.

OPTIMISM

The ability of the Produttori di Gavi to bravely face the future, knowing that today’s hardships will be tomorrow’s success, both for the community and the entire territory

1951
The first statute

On September 23, in a meeting room at Gavi’s town hall, in front of notary Bosco Marengo, 83 pioneers established «Cantina Sociale Cooperativa di Gavi», the first in the Terre del Gavi. This handwritten document proved the commitment of the signing members to bring in «high-quality white “Cortese” grapes» to be vinified and then «sold collectively», generating a much higher income for the members. The first elected president was Giuseppe Traverso, known as Pedrin.

Stone pressing

The Cooperativa operated in the cellars of Palazzo Moro, at the entrance to the town of Gavi. Stone was still used for pressing and the grapes brought in did not reach 3,000 quintals per year.

Improving quality

The great harvests of the early 1960s pushed the Cantina Sociale to work on improving quality. Work on a new structure in the small town of Maddalena began: it was wider, spacious and equipped with modern technology. The number of members and consigned grapes increased, proving that the cooperative enjoyed the trust of the territory.

1974
The Doc and the «Produttori del Gavi»

Gavi was officially recognized as a Doc, Denominazione di origine controllata. The Cantina Cooperativa changed its name, becoming «Cantina Produttori del Gavi». The first labels were produced: a selection of grapes from the municipality of Gavi yielded Gavi and Gavi Etichetta Nera.

1993
The Consortium

Consorzio di Tutela del Gavi was founded to represent all local producers and promote the image of Gavi in the world.

The Docg

Gavi was officially recognized as a Docg (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), the highest recognition of quality for Italian wines. Gavi Docg can only be vinified in 11 towns in the province of Alessandria (Bosio, Capriata d’Orba, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Gavi, Novi Ligure, Parodi Ligure, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia, Tassarolo), as stated by the strict disciplinary. The document also allows for the inclusion of the town from which the grapes come. Gavi del Comune di Gavi rose, among the others, as the utmost expression of the denomination.

2006 – 2008
A contemporary winery

The members of Produttori del Gavi invested over 3 million euros in production technologies that increased the speed of grape collection, improved delicate pressing and maintained cold temperatures throughout the entire processing. The goal was to increase wine quality by carefully evaluating each consignment and, starting right from the pressing, enhance the distinct expressiveness of the Cortese grape based on the enological result pursued.
